MasterCard to Power Nigerian Identity Card Program

***13 Million Cards to be issued first, in largest card rollout of its kind in Africa


Cape Town, South Africa – May 8, 2013 – The Nigerian National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and MasterCard today announced at the World Economic Forum on Africa the roll-out of 13 million MasterCard-branded National Identity Smart Cards with electronic payment capability as a pilot program. The National Identity Smart Card is the Card Scheme under the recently deployed National Identity Management System (NIMS). This program is the largest roll-out of a formal electronic payment solution in the country and the broadest financial inclusion initiative of its kind on the African continent.

Religious Violence: Christian Vs Muslim Clash Killed 20 In Taraba State

According to an anonymous source, over 20 people were killed on Friday during a violent fight between Christian and Muslim mob in Taraba state.

“We have recovered 20 bodies from the violence so far,” the source said Saturday, adding that the unrest had occurred in the town of Wukari, some 200 kilometres (125 miles) from the state capital Jalingo.

Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday said contrary to reports, the state government’s private jet costs $45m (N7.1bn) and not $57 (N9bn).

A 35-year-old commercial bus driver, Abraham Ikujunni, has been arrested for allegedly assaulting and stripping an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, half naked. According to LASTMA authorities, the bus driver allegedly stripped an official, Oyeyemi Olusola, ripping his pair of trousers apart. It was learnt that the incident occurred in the Ikorodu area of the Lagos State. The suspect was accosted for not wearing a seat belt before the incident occurred.

I ‘ll contest presidential election again in 2015 — Buhari

Minna—Former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, said he “will surely seek the mandate” of Nigerians in the 2015 presidential election under the platform of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Buhari who lost the 2011election on the platform of Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, however said he was ready to step down for any other better candidate that may emerge under the new party.

He spoke in Minna, capital of Niger State during the maiden edition of Sam Nda-Isaiah Annual Lecture Series, saying that politics should not be seen as a do-or-die affair.
